Week One. . .of Five Short Weeks Together!

Welcome to Ed422! The summer course attempts to squeeze 16 weeks of instruction into 5 short weeks. While this is a daunting task, it is clearly not impossible as many before you have made this dangerous journey :-)

This week: I will try and introduce you to the course, discuss the syllabus, teach you to love the Mac, how to IM while having you create Yahoo and Google acounts, discuss blogging, EdTechProfile, and social bookmarking!

Your task this week: to feel comfortable using a Mac, join ISTE and TaskStream, and buy any supplies you will need for the course.

Journal #1: This is from the latest Learning & Leading with Technoogy (L&L): the article is titled "Your Google Guide", by Doug Johnson. This is from the May 2007 issue. You must be an ISTE member to access the article. Good luck!

As I give you information through this blog, I will also give you a fun question to resond to that shows me you read my instructions and are participating in the class.

This week's question: What grade and/or subjects do you teach or want to teach and why???

I would like to teach Math or Spanish in a middle school setting. I began working with kids at an after school program located in San Marcos Middle School. I had such a great experience working with that age group that ever since I left the program, I have dreamed of returning not as a tutor/mentor but as a middle school teacher.

I would like to teach either elementary or middle school. I have wanted to be a teacher for a very long time and finally I am taking the steps to make my dream a reality. I'm so excited!!

I would love to teach either kindergarten, first grade or second grade. I would love to be able to have an influence on children at a young age!

I have always thought that I wanted to teach third or fourth grade. This may change after I do more student teaching. I love being around kids in this age group because they seem like so much fun. I like to incorporate games and leaning and although I know you can do this at all grade levels, I feel like this level is more into the games I like to play. I don't have any serious preference on subject matter, but I do like history and health ed.

I want to teach high school Government and Economics. I will probably also have to teach US History and World History, but if I could be a full-time Government teacher I would not object. The main reason that I want to teach Government is that it seems to me that each generation has become more and more apathetic and disillusioned with politics, and especially politicians. I want to restore some faith in the system, and to get kids to understand that casting an educated vote is one of the most important things they can do for society.

I really think that I would like to teach 6th grade. I love that at this age they can joke around and have fun. I remember having a great 6th grade teacher and he always made us feel like we were capable of anything.

probably P.E.- like 5th or 9th grade or something. An odd numbered grade.

I would like to teach elementary school, though I am not sure what grade. I interned for k-5, and I particularly enjoyed the upper grades. Hopefully my student teaching experience will shed some more light on this.

I want to teach high school. I have considered teaching at all levels, but I want to coach football and track & field at the high school level. Plus, I substituted for junior high in special education and I was miserable. I was lucky when I was in high school to have parents that knew about going to college and when to start the process. I think there are more kids than I'd expect who are smart enough to go to college but just don't know what to do about it. I want to be there for them too.

I would like to teach 10th grade English (which was British Literature when I was in that grade). I'm a Lit/Writing major with a literature emphasis. My favorite area is British literature and Shakespeare. This genre and author in particular are very important and I want to make the subject more enjoyable for students. In my own experience, many of my high school peers saw English as a chore. I would like to make this subject something that is fun for students to study.

As an Assistive Technology Practitioner/Specialist, I have only recently thought about teaching again. (Not a whole heck of a lot of school district AT jobs out there....) I will finish my Mulitple Subject and Education Specialist credentials next month, and am applying for mostly RSP and other mild/mod jobs at the secondary level. I would love to teach high school RSP, and will continue to look for AT opportunities.

I'm actually not really sure anymore. I keep going back and forth between first or second grade and midde school. I like middle school age kids a lot but I just know what a hard age it can be.

I originally wanted to teach 2nd grade. While I was going to Palomar I learned that getting your credentials in Special Education opened up a few more doors and opportunities, so I said why not? As I have been making this journey towards my educational goals, I am glad that I have made the decisions that I did and I am very exicited to work with children with special needs in the near future.
