Week Four: Feeling the Burn

I'm sure you are all feeling overwhelmed, but we are almost finished!! There are only a few more new assignments left. I realize that it is difficult to get everything completed in such a short amount of time, but y'all are doing great!

Left Over from Last Week: Finish your Inspiration/Kidspiration graphic organizer and your collaborative copyright assignment!

This week: Tuesday I will go over the narratives again and everyone should write the narrative for NETS I and request feedback (you should also be uploading your assignments as artifacts on TaskStream). I will also walk you through how to use iMovie and you will create a 30 second movie set to music(Please bring headphones if you have them!!). We will also discuss your social justice movie and plan on some time to film! On Thursday, we will work on the social justice movies and finishing up any unfinished work. I will also post an excel assignment that you will be able to complete on your own.

Journal 7 & 8 & 9: You may search L&L, T.H.E. Journal or any other appropriate site to find an article on something that relates to technology and education. You can try this article from Slate magazine, "In Your Face," by Christopher Beam. You could also try this one from Slate: "Google Spy," by Michael Agger. For #9, you're on your own ;-)

Week Three. . .Grasping for Air!

Wow, after Tuesday's class we will be at the half-way point for this course. I suppose this is good and bad news as I know many of you are probably feeling overwhelmed with the amount of work in the course. My advise would be to just complete one assignment at a time and don't forget your journals (1-4 are due this weekend).

This week: you should have finished your powerpoints by Tuesday's class. I will show you how to create a rubric to grade the powerpoints (which we'll do on Thursday!). I will also introduce the wiki assignment in class on Tuesday. On Thursday, you will grade powerpoints, be introduced to Inspiration/Kidspiration, and work on the copyright assignment.

Journal 4: We are going to move outside of L&L for Journal 4. This journal comes from a magazine called "T.h.e Journal," which is a complimentary magazine when you join CUE (Computer Using Educators). It has some great articles and is another resource for the remaining journals. I will ad a link to it under "Really Cool Links!". For journal 4, I want you to read the article, "Moderating and Ethics for the Classroom Instructional Blog," by Paricia Deubel. If my embedded link doesn't work, you may use the link to the Journal and search the "article search" in the magazine area to fine the article.

Journal 5: Optional for extra credit. You may either search L&L or The Journal to find an article related to an issue of technology. The same criteria apply, but you must get this in by the due date if you are to receive extra credit.

Journal 6: This begins the second set of journal articles. Journal's 6-9 are due July 2. You may choose your own articles for 6-9, but I will also give you options if you do not want to choose. For this journal you may read "Filming Compassion," by Janet Bremer and Marilyn Clark. L&L, April 2005.

This Week's Question: Would you try just as hard in a class that was pass/fail or are you primarily motivated by grades? Explain your answer.

Week Two. . .I'm a Mac!

As we settle into week two of our 5 short weeks together, I hope that you are becoming more comfortable with the pace of the course and are beginning to love the Mac! I want to remind everyone that I expect you to answer the weekly question (by leaving a comment) so I am assured that you understand what each week's assignments are. As of Monday evening, I only have 6 comments. Also, with such a tight schedule, you really need to do your best to get your assignments in on time as I will be grading them fairly quickly. As I stated on the first day, if your assignment is not submitted when I sit down to grade them, you will lose points.

This week: You are going to be introduced to the newsletter, powerpoint, and intro to Taskstream assignments. May students love the Newsletter assignment as it allows you to be very creative. Try to keep up with the journal assignments. . .the first 4 are due sooner than you think.

Journal 2: "Real-Life Migrants on the MUVE", by Ross Perkins and Cathy Arreguin. It is in the latest issue of L&L, May 2007, and can be found by going to the ISTE website. To access: go to ISTE, sign-in, click on the publications tab, choose L&L and you should see the May 2007 issue on the left side.

Journal 3: "Social Justice: Choice or Necessity?", by Colleen Swain and David Edyburn. It can be found in the March 2007 issue of L&L (Volume 34, issue 6).

Week One. . .of Five Short Weeks Together!

Welcome to Ed422! The summer course attempts to squeeze 16 weeks of instruction into 5 short weeks. While this is a daunting task, it is clearly not impossible as many before you have made this dangerous journey :-)

This week: I will try and introduce you to the course, discuss the syllabus, teach you to love the Mac, how to IM while having you create Yahoo and Google acounts, discuss blogging, EdTechProfile, and social bookmarking!

Your task this week: to feel comfortable using a Mac, join ISTE and TaskStream, and buy any supplies you will need for the course.

Intro Letter

My name is Jeffery Heil and I am from. . .I'm not sure. I was born in Las Vegas, NV and lived there until I was two years old. Then I moved to Phoenix, AZ and lived there until first grade. . .then I moved back and forth from Seattle, WA (actually, Marysville, but no one outside of the NW knows the city). I attended quite a few elementary schools in Phoenix and Marysville and then attended two high schools twice. I started high school in Marysville, moved to Phoenix, moved back to Marysville, then moved back to Phoenix to finish high school.

My experiences with technology are varied. I had little or no experience until I began college, then I developed a love of computers. I am proficient in many different programs from basic word processing to advanced video editing. I have been teaching educational technology for the last two years and I love to show people how to integrate technology into their teaching!

The mission statement of the CSUSM/COE was a factor in my decision to apply to be a distinguished teacher in residence (DTiR). As a San Diego County Office of Education employee, working for the Juvenile Court and Community Schools, I have been very committed to ensure educational equity for all students. The academic achieivement gap isn't something that will go away with positive thoughts, but through hard work and dedication from everyone involved in the education of our students. I see CSUSM as an istitution dedicated to producing educators who can affect positive change as we transform public education!
